Position Summary

APIAHiP, in partnership with 4Culture, seeks a motivated Equity in Historic Preservation intern to support digital humanities and public history programming, with a primary focus on documenting and mapping Japanese American heritage in the White River Valley (King County, WA) in collaboration with the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) Puyallup Valley Chapter. Alongside this core project, the intern will also contribute to broader research and preservation initiatives focused on underrepresented Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander historic places throughout the region. This work builds on past studies that explore how landmark designation and survey practices have historically excluded marginalized communities, with the goal of advancing more equitable approaches to preservation.

Hiring Timeline

• Internship applications will be accepted until August 10.

• One round of finalist interviews will be conducted between August 11-15.

• Applicants will hear back by August 15.

• The internship will span 10-15 weeks, up to 200 hours total, from September to November. Work schedules may be flexible toward the intern’s other academic and professional obligations.
