JAPANESE AMERICAN HISTORIC PLACES IN THE WHITE RIVER VALLEY: DIGITAL ARCHIVE AND INTERACTIVE STAMP BOOK

On March 8, 2026, we celebrated the work of Karino Wada, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation (APIAHiP) and 4Culture Equity in Historic Preservation Intern at the White River Buddhist Temple.

Over the past six months, Karino conducted important research on Japanese American historic places in the White River Valley of Washington State, building on the work of previous intern Jade Wahlgren. Her research led to the creation of a new subcollection within APIAHiP's East on Main Street collection on Historypin.

Karino also created a hands-on historic site stamp book — an interactive public history tool designed to bring her research to life and connect the community with the deep roots and contributions of Japanese Americans in the White River Valley.

This Equity in Historic Preservation Internship was supported by APIAHiP, the 4Culture Beyond Integrity Program, and the Puyallup Valley Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL).
